RunReid was founded in 2014 with the aim to encourage people to get fit and healthier whilst raising money and awareness for worthwhile causes and charities.
2015 will be our first event and we are very proud to be supporting the duchennes muscular dystrophy charity, Save Our Sons, on its Walk to Save our Sons.
Three cities, 700 kilometers from Newcastle, NSW to our nation’s capital city, Canberra, in the ACT.
Run Reid will be pushing an empty wheelchair over a grueling 350 kilometers course from Newcastle to Sydney in JUST 48 HOURS!!!!!
The empty wheelchair is a symbol of DMD. Due to the severity of the disease 100 per cent of DMD sufferers end up in a wheelchair. Mostly, at huge costs to the family. Sadly, due to the 100 per cent death rate of DMD patients, eventually all the family are left with is an empty wheelchair. By raising awareness of this RunReid hopes to contribute to Save Our Sons and help them get access to clinical trials in Australia for children with DMD.
We will be travelling via a carefully planned route, taking in some breathtaking scenery of NSW’s Hunter region, the rugged central coast and down to Sydney, Australia’s most populated city.
The event will start on Wednesday 29 April 2015 at the iconic Nobbys beach in Newcastle.
From there we will follow a route taking in Merewether beach, famous for Surfest, and Redhead beach before moving on to Belmont and then Swansea, beautiful towns in Lake Macquarie.
From there we travel through Caves Beach and Cams Wharf before running through the Munmorah state conservation area.
Next we run through the beautiful central coast, passing through Budgewoi and Magenta Shores then running along the idyllic shorelines of Tuggerah lakes.
Passing through the coastal tourist town of The Entrance, we continue running right along the coast through to Bateau Bay and Forresters Beach before taking on the extreme gradients of the hills of Terrigal, Avoca and Copacabana before running along the shoreline of McMasters Beach.
The biggest challenge of the event takes place here where we take on the steepest climb of the event, a massive 150 metre climb in just three kilometers before heading back down to sea level to catch the ferry from Wagstaffe to Palm Beach.
From Palm Beach we push ourselves to Dee Why, travelling through Mona Vale, Warriewood and the Collaroy plateau. We then hug the coast again through freshwater and the most famous northern beach, Manly.
Leaving Manly we travel to McMahons Point before taking in the most scenic point of the event, crossing the infamous Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Travelling south we pass through the rocks and the CBD before taking a hard left and travelling out to the beautiful suburb of Vercluse, passing through potts point, double bay and rose bay.
From Vaucluse we travel south through dover heights to Australia’s most famous beach, Bondi. We will sadly bypass a dip and a drink at Icebergs as we head west through Paddington, Haymarket and Glebe. Here we head northwards up into Drumoyne, up through lane cove and into Warrawee.
Here we head west again, travelling via Fox Valley Road all the way to Castle Hill and on to Wianamatta Regional Park. Taking the long way round we travel the entire perimeter of the park before heading back east through Werrington county. We continue through Mt Druitt before arriving at our final destination and handover point – The Children’s Hospital at Westmeads.
From there, a team of walkers from Save Our Sons will take the wheelchair on to Canberra, to deliver its message requesting clinical trials for medications to treat DMD to commence in Australia, mostly funded by YOU!
This EPIC adventure will be completed by four determined runners, undertaking 4.73 marathons EACH in just two days!
More information to follow shortly! Please contact us in the meantime, if you would like to be involved or would like to donate.
